Dvd case

Nw with a bit of work I made my case seem a bit more interesting. I incorporated the ESPN logo at the top left and also added the basic information on the side such as the Module and year of brief. Also with the title of what the dvd is about.

On the back I added a star just to make it seem more american (stars and stripes) which I think looks really good, But could appear as though it is based upon Orlando Magic. I may have to get rid of it due to that.

I added dvd content in there and other standard dvd information I added logos of brands which the dvd is formed around and also a barcode with the module code added at the bottom.

I think that I am close to the final draft of this. and I believe it works really well.

I think I want to make a leaflet on the inside with information about my work on it if I have the time. I think that would be pretty cool and help out.

DVD case

So I thought as I am a Graphic Designer it may be a good idea to produce a case and Dvd photo. I have chosen to stick with the basic Allstar top ten legends title as it states what the dvd is about. and the colour scheme does also.

Now the fist dvd I made looks like this:

And I think it looks really cool but when it is linked in with my case it doesn't look exactly right. That was when I decided on testing what It would look like with my cover colour and I honestly think it looks really good and will look a lot better when printed.
I have chosen to do a title sequence on Basketball legends I believe that my subject is very clear with the strengths being basketball related material i.e. ball bouncing and animation also the colour tone being red white and blue, NBA.
I wanted the mood to be quite in your face and extreme, as I am advertising it for late night ESPN (American sports channel) but I did not want to cause any offence by being to extreme and corny. I believe the starting sequence work very well in telling you that it is about sports and most likely basketball. It then goes into more detail about what is being shown. I have decided to save the programs title for the end, In order to keep the viewer interested.

I wanted to advertise this to male sports fans, over 21’s, American audience which according to a lot of my I-dent and introduction footage to basketball games it covers. I believe the colour scheme is very American and pays compliments to the stars and stripes, Which they are very proud of.

I do think my video needs a bit more work such as audio and it also needs to be cropped as some of the footage is far too long and does drag on a little. I plan to shorten this video down and make it short and snappy at certain sequences to keep the audience entertained. Sports fans like excitement, thrill and surprise like in a match. Not like when watching bowls. Which is exactly what my video has to be.

222 layers of illustrations later

It was at this point that I had to take screen grabs from the 'short' film at certain frames per second. I then took them into photoshop and edited them there 'fairly fast' although the quality was awful. It was then when I decided that I would use illustrator and vector draw them all, and so I ended up hand drawing with the pen tool the out line of each individual frame and then uploading it on a new layer. I ended up with 222 layers which was then divided down into two illustrator files.
I believe they look quite interesting when all together and coloured in. speaking of colour, i used the colour red rather than blue or white because it resembled a visual link to basketball all fans have which is the famous Air Jordan black and red colour scheme.

Storyboard scannings (late)

I should of uploaded all these storyboards a long time ago, but I have been lazy and used my slow scanner at home as an excuse . Some of these thumbnails went as I wanted them to although I wasn't so sure about areas in some of them. I thought the colour scheme tied in very much with what I wanted to say and who i wanted to say it to although basketball player part seemed very long drifted in animating. Which now I look back on in association with my video it is. I just need to cut it down.

Up to date

So when I made the previous video I had forgotten about using movie and that we it was not allowed in our brief. In all honesty I couldn't of used it anyway due to the backing not being on Green screen. It was at this point I had to do something else.

The pre filter

So, in this video I plan to add a filter to my video in which it is two colour like the ipod breakdancing videos, hence why I am wearing an afro haha, I believe this went well although I believe it would of been a lot easier if I had someone to help pass me the ball and even record the video, but I didn't, I need to add some more features in after effects just to make it flow a lot better.

Documentation update ( should of done this sooner.)

My feedback stated that I had a great idea and concept but I should think about what I want to do a lot more and in a lot more detail, Which I agreed with, Some of the weaknesses were not relevant due to the fact the movie scenes were not yet created. However I believe certain areas of feedback were very useful and directed me in the right way. I decided at this point to ditch key elements in the movie and find an identity for who I was producing this Introduction for.

For some reason people enjoyed my storyboard illustrations, which was above my head as they didn't take exactly long, some suggestions were made that I should do the movement part in my film as these characters, which I strongly disagreed with. Due to the fact I thought the quality compared t the photography was far to much of a drastic change in quality, than to a vector change.

With taking my new idea of the faces

I incorporated it in such a way that it became very American and worked out very well and relative to the whole videos deliverables:

In essence I think that this at the end would make an awesome introducing title sequence in responce to what the programs top ten is.

Instead

of using the ball on it's own to bounce against the camera in my movie, I decided to incorporate a star shooting off the screen (Which symbolizes American (stars and stripes) ) This therefore will appeal a lot more to my ESPN fans.

update

I really am liking the direction that my video is heading at the moment, I love the fact that the espn logo doubles up as a ball and I think it fits the corny American graphics you get most of the time, I think that it is ace, I also produced a few characters within the NBA but added a filter so you can't make them out by looking at them straight off ( you have to concentrate on features/ no colour scheme binding them to thier reality character)

NBA Video update

So I thought that as I am going to be using a ESPN channel for my video, maybe I should introduce the channel at the start, to give it a bit more of character and a place. I think that this gives a great look for the introduction, all though I think it is missing something also I think that the video may be in the wrong order at the moment?

Wednesday, 20 January 2010

So in this video I have updated my work and added an audio track however, this is not the way I want my video to go at the moment, I believe that the images at the start are not so good and the type is awful, I don't think I am going to include that particular type/ words

Evaluation Focus Development

My problem is creating a dvd at the moment based upon a introduction to basketball. I have been studying information based upon the NBA, scores, top ranks, Most popular players, signature moves and other aspects related to basketball. Also I have been looking at channels in which my introduction would take place. Some channels I have been looking at vary from Sky one, to Sky sports to late night five. I am still undergoing research into this. Some other areas I have been looking at is the culture and background of basketball. I discovered that Hip-Hop is best associated with basketball (also it is a highly rated American sport).

I have been looking at visual material such as images, NBA magazines videos about the NBA and street ball and some And 1 mix tapes. I believe with the time available a lot can be achieved as long as I prepare storyboards and know my limits and keep things simple in a way in order to produce something of decent quality whilst being new to after effects. I have been evaluating my decisions by experiments on after effects and flipping and moving things around on my storyboards in order to make some parts make more sense and look better on screen.

I want to develop some sort of interactive feel with the dvd, like the watcher is some way involved with it. I would like to communicate a strong American feel to the video i.e sticking with reds and blues and I really want the video to be in your face with crazy american style sports graphics (as I have researched in my design context) My audience is based around 21+ American Basketball fans.

I have identified that I am rather poor at after effects and that it will be a struggle to produce what is in my head. But I believe with enough hard work it will come together alright. I require more channel research and need to find out if what I am making works as a whole. And really states what I want to promote which is Basketball. My intention is to produce a 30-50 second clip which says top ten basketball legends. but really has a street ball kind of edge to it. Quite urban if you will as And 1 and NBA are very well associated together.

From my initial starting point I believe that I have moved on a lot from where my designs originated. I have already come to terms with what I can and cannot produce with my restrictions. I think as long as I jot down more storyboard ideas and concepts I should be alright for developing my project. I plan to use after effects a lot as well as using the interenet and books as re sources from the library. I intend to use these workshops whenever they are available, late nights, days and saturdays if it is open.

first draft of intro

So this video is basically the first draft of the introduction and is how I was thinking of having the video go, I think theres a very lot of work to do on it but At least this is a start.

Videos to help me understand movement on screen (some are the wrong way round. stupid phone camera)

So for my video I thought it would be a good idea to get my mindset back into the basketball standards, in order to understand the movement of a ball and baller.
I carried out some experimentation on spinning the basketball and dribbling. pretty rough though

The Sin City concept

I carried out a few examples of playing around with black and white and colour:

So

I have chosen the top ten brief and my subject matter is top ten basketballers of all time. There is a lot I would like to incorporate into this video, I would like to make things look handmade and maybe urban so sub cat:

What words describe basketball?
What is urban?

I have been looking into the i-pod dance videos and the two colour scheme caught my attention and the lack of detail which makes me think that It is something I can incorporate into my video without worrying about it being a real time consumer. Although looking into different colours I think I would like to try something a bit like sin city. I'm going to do some experiments using drawings, stock production and video to try out a few moves. and take the key frames out of them. I am going to look into different basketball moves I can use. I do not think gaining endless information to back up my top ten is necessary as that would be making a program rather than an introduction to one. Completely different things.

Reds and Blues.
Also I was thinking about this ident being advertised on sports channels such as: Sky One and ESPN, Even channel 5 late night.

few sneaky ideas before i commit to a top ten

One thing i am very interested in is the top ten man made wonders of the world
as well as the natural, here is a diagram I drew of where these wonders are located in the world

Here are a few basic images of the locations attractions.
