Diesel brief re write

Brief-

choose a band or artist and create an illustrated response inspired by two of their tracks.

The audience -

The target audience intended for the illustration will be the fan base of the musician/band/artist you select as part of answering the brief.

The problem-

Smart may have the brains. But stupid has the balls. Be un expected

The requirements -

You should consider how musicians are reinventing the way that they interact with their fans and the increased importance of building intimate relationships and new experiences between fans and bands.

Deliverables -

Produce a minimum of two illustrations, each based on a different track from any band or artist who’s music inspires you.

You must document and present the work in A3 format as per the Formatting Guidelines PDF. The choice of band is unimportant – they maybe well known or equally unheard of.

• Create a short, clear and concise presentation of how the illustration would be integrated within the context of an unconventional music experience.

• Ashortexplanation(max300words) about how you decided to interpret the music.

• For the benefit of the jury,pleasealso submit MP3s of the two tracks that your work is based on.

What will you get out of it?

A chance to step out of my comfort zone and create something unexpected and out of this world

Mock up

This mock up was a great investment as it showed me the areas that need changing in order for my book to work. One issue is the binding, the page scale needs extending by at least 2.5 CM in order to fit a ring bind in which will not cut off the photo. Also the logo is in the wrong place, it needs placing at the bottom of right in reverse to work.

When the book carried on, the next major problem was that the portrait images were the wrong way round so they need flipping round.

Final issue was that the logo was in the wrong place again. It needs to be on the bottom right for all the images and has to stay in the same place in order for the landscape to portrait imagery to work.

It was deemed appropriate to do a tester of what it would look like digitally before I tried to screen print.

I will be using a dark black to screen print onto crimson and the triangle will be a gold foil print. Overall I think it looks great like this and I am excited to give it a go in the screen room and see how it turns out as soon as I get some money for screens.

Layout

So as I messed around with the layout It came into my occurrence that I needed to work out a way to incorporate portrait with landscape, as 70% of my content was portrait it seemed in best interest to make the book portrait.

I laid out the book as though it was a portfolio, I used my landscape produce first and then opened with a strong piece and then sandwiched it all together so it kept the book interesting.

The first mock up of the book was done in B/W without a duotone so I then moved on to alter the images by rescaling and turning them into the correct format and switching the images.

Once printed this is what the layout should look like, I am going to print this off and make a mock up design to find any problems which need addressing.

Cover

One of the main areas I needed to look appealing was the front cover I needed the imagery to work in with what the book showed therefore I needed a new tattoo design which summed up the book without looking to much better than the designs inside, I had a strong idea of what I wanted to compsition wise and that was link in the all seeing eye with the triangle some scroll shapes and rays with type, I chose to call the book Slaves of Grace.

After adding to a lot of the imagery I thought that it could be cool if I tried something odd with manipulation and the image:

It turned out to be over complex and many of the class chose the other image I originally chose to use, i put the type at the top subtly as the title didn't really matter it was just a form of identification, the image was the main sell point I added victorian like decorations to the corners to draw attention to the centre of the book.

The book was the only part of the product which I wanted to use colour on, I thought that a old school crimson would look amazing with black.

I even tried flipping the colours but it didn't work out quite as well.

I drew out the products first stage of development and then added colour as i thought it would look amazing to use 2 colour plus stock on the produce.

Once uploaded I messed around with the editing of the image and digitalised the pyramid so it will come out nice and smooth.

As a final this is how it will look before screen printing takes place.
