Poppy comp

Basically i thought why not compete in this competition as i am broke and would enjoy a bit of money to survive.... in all essence i did a few design sheets and thought about what would be appropriate too the design. I narrowed it down to two things which were belt buckles and wrist bands.

the buckles would be average quality and would be limeted addition, were as the bands would be more cost effective and would be a lot easier to produce a mass batch of:

Today we had our second type lesson, we started off by thinking back on last weeks lesson and the skills we all had learnt, then we went on into discussing type and spacing of type or in our case (typographers) Kerning - The space between characters, an example of this was train track as seen below:

We were asked too just use a basic higher case helvetica pt 72 structure.

The top train track is the kerned version were as the bottom is the orig

inal, there's not much difference between the two but there is a lot. one is much more clear and more appropriate in the layout.

After kerning we looked at sentence layout, we had too type FOUR THREE TWO ONE and make it read as ONE TWO THREE FOUR without re typing it as one two three four.

By using different type boxes for the letters it allowed me too make four come before the rest of the letters but with one on top, made the illusion of reading top too bottom rather than left too right.

Same again bad using gradients allowed me too make the one stand out more than the rest making a visual hook taking you top too bottom.

We also did some work on proverbs which ended up in mine being shocking so i will not show that this week.

Type and grid

Recently we have been learning all about type and how too make it look good and correct by altering the weight using the appropriate typefaces (serifs and sans) and not using colour.

We have been looking at simple exercises to emphasise words without using image.

For example: using type describe a shy dog:

I straight away thought a basic times typeface would suit, but, in

all essence the layout and type size were the important things to consider in delivering the appropriate message. i made the type size 8pt so it did not make eye contact with the viewer straight off, but it was big enough to be read. I chose too compose the type at the bottom of the page because something shy would not be high up, if it was a proud dog it would be higher, or a jumping dog. i tucked it in the bottom left corner as we read left to right, so it fitted well when positioned there unlike if it was in the right, it would lose feel and look lost in a way, somewhat exposed.

After this we delivered a piece we were asked too make a type for a angry dog:

I used all highercase too make it seam loud, like a shout or in this case bark, without the need of adding exclamation marks or using a red for the type. I positioned it spot on in the middle so it is in your face and a 72pt size to make it legible. Rather than altering the weight of the type too heavy i wanted to make it much bolder so i increased the stroke from 0 -3 pt which gave a great heavy woof outcome.

Postcard brief

I began this brief by gathering some research on colour
I thought rather than jump right in i should investigate which colours
compliment one another and which contradict.




During the project i thought about which stocks i should be using for what i was
trying too visualy communicate

e.g. if you are producing an icon for tomato ketchup you wouldnt use green as a stock or main colour, you would use red, as it is the colour of the sauce.



I produced a lot of icons for this piece, the simple bold ones tend too work alot better than
any one with detail. out of my work i believed the gutair hero one too be the more interesting peice and was more relevant too my summer.


I decided too make the postcard a unique shape for more of an emphasis, i also used the transparacy tool too make one colour too its advantage, blue stock, blacks and greys as one tone changed colour.

I found the logo one too be the best, i decided too re-design the blossom holl logo
as i am a wine freak and tend too purchase the old bloss.


within designing the logo i thought about its colours and how they could be manipulated
according too the flavours of wine available, which proved too be interesting, as a final i chose
the blossoming flower with calligraphy.

Summer, summer, summer... timeee

Okay it's 07:41am and i have been awake for at least 30 hours now, so far through this time away from the timetabled course (4days) i am lost and my sleeping pattern is mangled up. Night is day, day is night. I basically can not win, however, with night being day it gives me a lot less of a interactive human pleasurment selection of things to do, as everywhere is closed, everyone normal is alseep and everything is offline.... so why not start the summer brief off with a random walk in the middle of the night to find type, image and message! here is a taster of a few photos i took this night, the aim was to see what graphical icons could be found in an area that would be visited on a night walk, heres the canal! Not only was this walk a nice relax, but a real eye opener. But i found interesting a reallllllly old navigation stone with old graphic design images carved into itone being the royal bank of scottland logo which looks like this: and well it made me think how old the logo for RBS is. so i looked at a bit of secondary sources and discovered the bank and logo were actually founded in 1727 which deffenitly gave the direction stone a bit of age. One thing i thought it was ridiculous the fact that within the space of 20 metres there were two different designs for a No fishing sign. Both vector based images, both black figures with the simple red ban circle the only real difference is one tried to be more realistic than the other. The more detailed one seemed inapropriate in comparison to the tone of the other illustration practically at it's front door. but overall my trip of the canal ended in me making a homophobic to some kind of message. then i deffenetly did that with the second image, not for the warm hearted! warned thats it for now, blog out x

Well ive been checking illustrator out quite a lot recently and have been trying to brush up my skills on it, and all that jazz.After the Johnny Cupcakes lecture i thought about re developing an old logo i made from my previous college, i basically thought that if i applied this to some merchendise it could bite and i could make a bit of money over the summer for rent, i call it my 'get rich or die trying scheme' but without the wholeee death haha:(WARNING THIS LOGO MAY CONTAIN COPYRIGHT)Sweet man

So, one thing i have noticed during the holidays is that i play drums a lot with my spare timeAnother thing i noticed.... is that i brake ALOT of drum stickssooo on a fine night with nothing to do i decided to experiment with some drum typei discovered that some letters work better than others.i believe selected letters were a success but over all 60% of the letters do not workwhat so ever and doesnt work appropriatly:oh well.

General playing, i thought i would try to make a image out of type this is my first attempt in preperation in how to learn to make it more interesting appealing

So i tried to further the type, i thought it could work better digitalyhere is the comparison between digital and realI believe with the correct backing colour this could be a very successful piece to work with:What do you think?

see my k........ mystery workbut i wanted to make a piece of work as a responcein supporting my research that CYMK is over ratedit is practically everywhere and it is getting a bit boringseeing it all around. it's getting to be past it's celbidate inall honesty, im waiting for some whitty ideas..in the mean time i experimented with typei decided that for every letter of CYMK i wouldplace an item which had relation with the colourfor example:CYAN - Water, skyYELLOW - SunMAGENTA - Luxery, comfortBLACK - Spray paint - urbanhere are some examples of development:MESSY but why not play?
