T&G 5

We started this lecture by reviewing what we have learned over the previous weeks:

Fonts
Weights
Layouts
Tones
Typography Terms
Kerning
Spacing
Leading
Readability
Legibility
Number of words on a line (average) 6-12
Analyzing type
Formats - Landscape, Portrait
Grids and impact on the design
Text and Image
Judgement
Evaluating
Decision making
Columns
Creativeness

In this session we moved back onto single words for communication..
so far we have to elaborate how a Spanish Sparrow sounds which is apparently according to a
bird watchers book they 'Chilp' and when they are irritated they communicate 'Cher'r'r'r'r'r'.
and when it is not irritated 'Cherrrrrr'.

Graham: "There is another term when it is more pissed off rather than irritated"
which is 'Cher...r...r...r...r...'

This process is replicating sound.

70% of birds are named after the sound they make. i.e. The tit which uses different variations in sense of sound which are:

'tit'
'tiiiit'
'tiiiiiiiitsch'

Different countries have different alphabets for example the:

UK - 26 Letters
Welsh - 29

This shows how other languages are more lyrical as with more characteristics in a language shows how many different variations in sound which is out there - Communication.

We now have to comminicate how someone would say our name:

This basically shows us how... Yorkshire we are.
Now we have to show how our name is said when someone isn't happy with us:

Well.... thanks Peter 'dad' for helping me out with how to communicate this one.
The difference between the two is obvious. One is laid back and calm, almost fun
whereas the bottom one is all in higher case with the same character added to the end
to make the tone a lot more serious.

This exercise helps us understand the elegance of type and how many different situations our
names could be narrated. This show how when we say something dependant, on the tone of our voice and how we say things, we already understand what they want.

Surname - trouble, attention, high school.
Accents - throws the reader into saying things out loud in order so they can capture the scene.

This is how someone communicates my name after they have known me for a while, under a certain situation. In my case... it is when I have done something cheekly wrong or destroyed Peter Sands's Possessions, dignity and also his room...

Our next task was to communicate an activity from when we wake up until when we get to college in the morning.

My two were car horns.... they love my cycling in the morning
and the second was my alarm.. great.

In this process we learned that there are a lot of individual sounds out there so it is very tough
to communicate what you actually mean.

In my opinion... I need my BMX servicing...
This is the sound of what My BMX makes every full turn whilst getting to the top of a hill
and going down.

Yeah and this is a train building speed up, maintaining and building up again as the weight drags it back

Chest piece alterations

Before choosing a chest piece design i thought i would have a look at other designs i could produced and then select one i wanted to use for my design.

I decided to try black and white bold images for the first one. however i do not believe it worked very well and looked like bad branding.

I then produced this which i really liked but it didn't seem quite appropriate for what i wanted
to use as an example of traditional tattoo.

I then produced this piece in CMYK which i fell in love with after a good 4 hours of designing it.
As it was complete I knew that I would use this as my mock up design for my product.

Product packaging and logo

I decided to make my logo name Blank Canvas as and used a strong block colour with a tattoo needle coming off it. My bag is going to to be made out of canvas as it is eco friendly and is being forced on us instead of plastic bags! the logo would be screen printed on as well as the plastic gloves.

I decided to make the tags for the clothing like tattoo appointment cards with the logo and blog address for further information on tattoos.

Target Audience, Sales outlet and fashion

My target audience is based towards Under 18’s as they are underage to get tattoos by law in the UK. From experience I got tattoos from 16 up and am fortunate not to regret any, were as over 84% of people I know with tattoos regret them within the year. These designs range from football logos to devils, silly skulls and the all topper, tribals.

My first ideas for tattoos I would of regretted all my life, although luckly i couldn’t fund the tattoo at the time therefore saving me from making this mistake, however I did get the money eventually and I know a lot of kids can get the money like that! the time kids begin to think about tattoos is around the end of high school and start of college/ 6th form.

Majority of underagees want tattoos because it is the rebelious thing to do and also want it as a fashion icon. They don’t think about the fact they will be wearing it for life. Although I am tattooed from leg to neck I appriciate the reality of things and can cover up all my tattoos by wearing a long shirt and troussers which enables me to get a job, where as some people get thier hands and neck done straight away with some tribal they saw Cherreyl Cole on X factor with.

(To the females of course) The downside of this is you cannot cover it, unless you wear gloves to an interview which is suspicuous. remember she is a millionaire and there is a time for such decisions as hand tattoos when your older.

With my product, I plan to design a t shirt similar the topman v neck with printed tattoos on the shirt so that under age tattoo desirer’s can wear ink without having to rid thier body of natural purity.

Along with this shirt I am going to make an information blog in order to discuss issues with u18’s about tattoos and why not to get them just yet in a formal way rather than a angry parent/ guardians approach of threatens.

My product blank canvas will be sold in tattoo shops as an campaigne against underaged people frauding shops for tattoos with borrowed ID’s or fake passports etc.

If a tattooist is caught tattooing an underage citizen or has found out to have done so, the tattoo shop is at risk of being shut down and even sentencing in prison due to this underages childish action.

I believe that many tattoo shops would sell these shirts in thier shops quite happily as it is giving thier buisness a new market that couldn’t be reached before (unless there is a piercer)

Within current fashion develpment the main high street shop on the market for teens is infact Topman, the 2 for £10 deal drives them nuts, the most popular sales according to the people at Leeds topshop on Briggate are the plain v neck tshirts which is how I know that the style of t shirt is deffenitley a could style to manipulate, another one of their great sales are the printed t shirts with icons such as Fred Flinstone, Captain cave man and other prints such as the great prints in t shirt which have head phones printed on the shirt or other items such as jewelry and glasses etc.

T&G 4

Today we are looking at full pages of type, in comparison to last week in which we looked at columns.
We first opened a new document, 1 column and in portrait.

Then we placed some previously typed text into the column

It came out like this:

We then selected pages and made a master page

Master page - magazine variety of different columns, background pages (template)

This was a simple process which meant we could keep the type.

We then chose to make a two columned page

which originally looked like this:

We then pasted the text into the first column, although it all wouldn't fit and i learned that if you click the bottom right of the text there is a red square which then shows the sign below:

This then allows you to drag your text into another column and make it look like this:

We were then asked to make the type fit both columns without changing the typeface or weight. but still keeping it legible.

Then we were asked to do the same with the single column
and to fit around about 12 words per line. this was a difficult task when you didn't know
how to exactly produce this.

We then divided the type into two columns which made it a lot easier to do.

I played around with some kerning and changing the leading up and down for legiblilty

I also changed the justify which made the type look messed up in some areas.

I then made an indent on the type to see the view.

We then moved onto 3 columns.

This was a lot easier to calculate rather than 2 or 1, i'm not sure whether it was
because i go use to changing the layout or whether it was because 3 is generally easier.

We then were asked to do what we want, however an image was to be added.
and we had to make it fit to a two column and still look readable.

We then tried it with a two column.

5 column grids don't work very well and my image wasn't uploading...

In Design Colour

So we had our InDesign colour lecture the other day, we basically
started up by opening indesign

Then we changed the preferences from pixels to mm's as it is what we tend to work with more frequently and is also more accurate on our maths .

Now it is time to open a new document by holding apple and N as a shortcut, we set the work
to facing pages and i set it to the size i wanted my booklet, 25x25cm
We then set the gutter and margins.

This is how the document should look:

We then selected a cmyk image off the internet to practice some fake montones on.

I then opened the swatches link on the right of the screen (may be hidden under window) and selected new colour swatch.

I then played around to make a random colour, I used 3 box's which were the same colour to show once one is selected all could be changed straight off.

This is what the colours have next to them.

I then clicked on the wrong things but learn how to make a new gradient, first of all i used the colour picker

And then this screen came up, I altered the settings to make the gradient i desired.

I then did the same thing but using new colour swatch, Using the pantone books
if I pre selected a colour, it would have a number, for example I used 131 which was a golden yellow

The colour then came up under my swatches once i selected okay, an interesting thing I learnt was that white is called paper on this which is quite smart, depending on the stock you use.

I selected a square and then clicked a swatch colour, which changed the pantone on the object

I then selected a new image which would be played around with,

I learned how to save some of the new colours i had made.

Then learned how to morph the colour balance of the image: this is sepia

Then I learned how to play around with the duotone to make the original image a series of different colours e.g. 1 - red and sepia, 2 - blue and grey

Then if I selected attributes and chose overprint fill

I could then change the opticity of overlayed colours to show what the out come would look like if those colours were then combined in a print.

I adapted this to my penguin image and gained an interesting affect which I think is very smart and before this lecture I would have had no idea of doing before.
